GTA 6 wildlife: how the animals, fur and marine life work

By Lorenzo Bruno, published October 29, 2026. Built on SubscribeForTacos's video, checked against Rockstar's footage.

GTA 6's wildlife system fills Leonida with more than 170 animal species across land, air and sea, with fully simulated fur that gets wet and matted, native and invasive Florida species, marine life you meet while scuba diving, and animals you can track as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary. Nearly all of that comes from one source: Game Informer's issue 382 cover story of September 29, 2026, where Rockstar's Michael Kane explains how the animals were built. The issue sits behind a paywall, so this guide follows SubscribeForTacos, who scrolled through the whole article on screen and read it aloud the day it came out, and checks every point against Rockstar's own trailers and screenshots.

Key facts

  • Game Informer counts over 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals among the 170-plus species, plus various fish and reptiles.
  • Michael Kane, Rockstar vice president of dynamic art, names different shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, each with its own movement behavior.
  • Game Informer lists green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques as invasive animals in Leonida.
  • Animals will show iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and feather types, building on Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption work, Game Informer reports.
  • Rockstar is keeping the identities of the Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals secret because it wants them to surprise players as they explore.

What is in GTA 6's wildlife system?

Game Informer's number is "over 170 animal species across the map", and it splits part of it: over 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals, "plus various fish, reptiles, and more." Take the birds and mammals away and roughly 80 species are left for fish, reptiles, amphibians and the rest. Both counts are minimums, so the split is rough.

Some of the 170 are Leonida natives that, in Game Informer's words, "have never appeared in a Rockstar game." Neither the magazine nor Rockstar says which. Our full animal list holds 48 entries as of October 29, 2026, and 26 of them are confirmed by a Rockstar image or by the preview text. The other 140-odd species are not known until November 19, 2026.

SubscribeForTacos was not impressed by the issue as a whole. He says about 90 percent of the 14 pages was already known, with maybe two pages of new information, and the wildlife and weather material is most of that new part.

Where do animals live in Leonida?

Everywhere, by Kane's account. He frames the wildlife as a map of Florida's habitats rather than a list of creatures:

Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida: urban and rural environs, aquatic life both inland and ocean, and the wetland habitats like the swamps and Everglades.

Michael Kane, Rockstar vice president of dynamic art, to Game Informer

He adds that the animal art and population teams wanted animals that are "accurately researched and look visually correct in every respect", along with the movement and animation to match. "Population" is the word to note: someone at Rockstar decides which animal turns up where.

The urban biome is the one Rockstar showed first. In Trailer 1, a store's security camera catches an alligator walking through the front door while customers stand around.

The wetlands belong to the Grassrivers. Rockstar's own page for the region says "the gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves." It does not say what those predators are. Its screenshots put alligators in the water during a police chase and around an airboat.

The rural side is Mount Kalaga, which Rockstar says "offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails." Deer and a cougar are already shown there; the hunting itself has its own page, our GTA 6 hunting guide, and so does the GTA 6 fishing guide.

Which native and invasive Florida species are in GTA 6?

Game Informer names both kinds. Kane "specifically confirms" manatees, flamingos and pelicans, and alligators were already shown. Next to them, the magazine says, GTA 6 has invasive animals "that have since become a problematic part of the state's ecological patchwork": green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. Florida does have monkeys, as the magazine points out.

The table puts each named animal next to its real status in Florida, from the sources on our species pages. Two of Game Informer's "invasive" animals are filed differently by those sources, and the table says so.

The iguana is the invasive species Rockstar shows most. A close-up opens the Launch Trailer at 0:21, and an official screenshot of the Leonida Keys has one crossing a street.

Rockstar screenshot. Rockstar captions it as an iguana walking in front of a mobility scooter in the Leonida Keys.

Game Informer's own lead-in to the wildlife section describes the real state, not the game: Florida as "the Australia of the U.S.", with iguanas in Broward County and Miami-Dade "lounging as commonly as squirrels and pigeons", and the Florida panther next to black bears, deer, wild boar and turkeys. Of those, only the cougar and the deer have been shown in Leonida. SubscribeForTacos adds a note of his own at that point: he has swum with wild manatees in Florida's natural springs. In the game, the manatee is still named only.

How does animal fur work in GTA 6?

This is the most technical claim in the article, and it comes from Kane directly. Game Informer reports "new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts", and says fur is fully simulated and set up for:

Human-to-animal interaction with dirt matting and clumping in environmental contexts, including getting wet, as well as color and coat variations.

Michael Kane to Game Informer, issue 382

Read it piece by piece. Fully simulated means the fur is not a painted texture. Dirt matting and clumping means a coat should look different after mud. Getting wet means a swim or a storm changes it. Color and coat variations means two animals of one species need not look alike. "Human-to-animal interaction" ties the fur to contact with people, which fits the Pet and Scold prompts in the Extended Look, covered in our police dogs and pets guide.

GTA 6 raccoon runs across a mud trail at the lower left as dirt bikes and a quad tear past rusted silos covered in graffiti
Rockstar screenshot. A raccoon at the far left, in the kind of mud that Kane says mats and clumps fur.

No Rockstar frame yet shows wet or muddy fur up close. The raccoon above is the nearest thing: a furred animal in a mud park, small in the shot. Raccoons sit on our mammals page. Whether pelts carry over to hunting rewards is a hunting question, and no source has answered it.

What do iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency mean for GTA 6 animals?

Game Informer says that, "leveraging Rockstar's work on the Red Dead Redemption series, animals will even display iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, and feather types." Those are four separate rendering jobs:

  • Iridescence: a sheen that shifts color with the viewing angle, as on many bird feathers.
  • Bioluminescence: light an animal makes itself.
  • Translucency: light passing through thin tissue, such as a fin or a jellyfish bell.
  • Feather types: different plumage drawn differently, not one feather pattern for every bird.

The article attaches none of them to a named animal. With 60-plus bird types, feather types matter more than anything else on that list, and the birds are where Rockstar's footage is richest: gulls in Trailer 2 and the Extended Look, pelicans named, a spoonbill and a crane in a preview screenshot. All of them are on our birds page.

GTA 6 Trailer 2 gulls: one grey and white gull stands on a deck railing and another walks on the wooden deck outside a room with a TV
Trailer 2, 2:11. Two gulls on a deck, grey and white plumage against the sun.

Bioluminescence is the odd one. On a map built on Florida, the sea is the likeliest place for an animal that glows, and jellyfish are on Kane's marine list. Which animal glows in GTA 6, though, is not known until November 19, 2026.

What marine life is in GTA 6?

Game Informer links the sea to scuba diving: since diving is one of the activities, "this naturally means plenty of marine life will be present." Then it gives Kane's list. Players will meet different shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, "which all have distinct movement behaviors." Rockstar has not described those behaviors. "Shark species", plural, means more than one kind of shark.

Rockstar's footage backs part of that. The Extended Look, at 17:18, looks up from an underwater cave past a diver at a group of rays crossing the light, with a school of small fish above. One of the Rockstar screenshots printed in Edge's cover story shows a hammerhead shark between rocks. Trailer 1 shows dolphin-shaped animals beside a catamaran at 0:11, small and seen from the air.

GTA 6 Extended Look underwater cave: a scuba diver swims below rays gliding across the bright opening, a school of small fish above
Extended Look, 17:18. Rays over a diver in a cave, with the oxygen bar at the top left.

The ray type cannot be read from the silhouettes. Our manta ray page keeps that frame as its proof, and the rest of the sea animals, the shark, whale, jellyfish, eel and manatee among them, sit on the sea life page with what each one rests on. Whales and jellyfish are named by Kane and not yet shown.

What animals can you see while scuba diving in GTA 6?

Scuba diving is on Game Informer's list of confirmed activities, next to base jumping, kayaking, mini golf, air boating and jet skiing. Rockstar's clearest underwater image is a Leonida Keys screenshot, captioned as "two scuba divers swimming underwater in the Leonida Keys surrounded by aquatic life including coral, fish, an eel, and a sea turtle."

GTA 6 scuba divers swim over a coral reef in the Leonida Keys, an eel in front of them and a sea turtle gliding across the foreground
Rockstar screenshot. Two divers, an eel at the left and a sea turtle in front: Rockstar names all of them in its caption.

That frame gives the sea turtle its confirmation. The Extended Look frame of the rays shows a bar at the top left of the screen, and TGG, as relayed by GTA6Activities, reports that you dive with an oxygen meter. That suggests a dive runs on limited air.

The rest is open. How deep you can go, whether sharks attack divers, whether gear must be bought, and which reefs or wrecks hold which animals are not known until November 19, 2026. Diving is also the likeliest way to see the whales and jellyfish Kane names, though no source says where.

How do Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals work?

Here is the whole of what Game Informer prints: GTA 6 "will similarly feature many animals for players to track, categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary." "Similarly" points back to Red Dead Redemption. Then the reason for the silence: Rockstar is keeping the identities of these animals "under wraps, as it wants them to surprise players as they explore."

GTA 6 cougar creeps through a shallow stream toward four deer drinking and resting in Mount Kalaga National Park
Rockstar screenshot. Rockstar captions it as a cougar stalking a herd of deer in Mount Kalaga National Park.

So no list of Legendary animals exists, and any list you see online is a guess. The creators' guesses, labelled as guesses:

  • Game Informer's writer hopes the Skunk Ape, "Florida's resident Bigfoot-esque cryptid", makes the cut. SubscribeForTacos doubts it: "I don't know about that."
  • TGG says a Skunk Ape turned up in the 2022 leaked files and does not know if it is still in the game.
  • TGG assumes that, as in Red Dead Redemption 2, Legendary animals will be needed for 100 percent completion.
  • GameSift thinks Mount Kalaga, a park built around hunting, is a good place to hide one.

How tracking works, what each tier rewards, and if you track with a camera or a rifle are not known until November 19, 2026. The hunting side is in our hunting guide; every animal already seen is in the trailer animals list, and you can tick them off in the GTA 6 animal checklist. How we grade each source is on our about page.

Wildlife system: questions

Does GTA 6 have realistic animal fur?

Rockstar says so. Michael Kane, Rockstar vice president of dynamic art, told Game Informer that fur is fully simulated, mats and clumps with dirt, gets wet, and comes in color and coat variations, on top of new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts. No Rockstar frame has shown wet or muddy fur up close as of October 29, 2026.

What invasive species are in GTA 6?

Game Informer's September 29, 2026 cover story names green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques as invasive animals in Leonida. Only the iguana has been shown by Rockstar so far, in the Launch Trailer and a Leonida Keys screenshot.

Are there sharks and whales in GTA 6?

Yes. Michael Kane told Game Informer that players will encounter different shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, each with distinct movement behaviors. A hammerhead shark appears in a Rockstar screenshot printed in Edge; no whale has been shown yet.

Can you track animals in GTA 6?

Yes, some of them. Game Informer reports that certain animals can be tracked and are sorted as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar keeps their identities secret so they surprise players, and how tracking works is not known until November 19, 2026.

Are there manatees in GTA 6?

Yes. Game Informer says Michael Kane specifically confirms manatees, along with flamingos and pelicans. Rockstar has not shown one in a trailer or screenshot as of October 29, 2026, so where they live in Leonida is unknown.

Is the Skunk Ape in GTA 6?

Nobody knows. Game Informer's writer only hopes Florida's Bigfoot-like cryptid makes the cut, and SubscribeForTacos doubts it. TGG says one appeared in the 2022 leaked files but may no longer be in the game. Rockstar has said nothing.
